Shelley Heard. My Line Dancing Career.
I started Linedancing in about 1992, in the outdoor area of a Hotel in Singleton, NSW. This was at the time Linedancing was becoming very popular in Sydney and Melbourne and also many country areas.
Being an avid Country Music fan, I was soon wanting to learn more dances.
I had always played sports during my life and danced as we all did (back then) on any dance floor. After attending Linedancing classes for a couple of months, I was lucky enough to Line Dance to Lee Kernaghan at a Sydney Rugby League Grand Final with 100's of other Line Dancers in front of 70,000 footy fans.
Lessons continued on back home, and I was asked to teach a Senior Citizen Group at Muswellbrook, in the Hunter Valley, NSW. With this being a great success, I continued on to teach for a large Line Dancing group from Newcastle and eventually had classes in Muswellbrook, Singleton and Denman, with a lot of travel in between classes.
I ran many Charity Socials and always raised money for the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service as I had family members who had the misfortune of requiring this service.
After a few years I branched out on my own, running classes in these same towns and also in many small country halls in the area.
Later I was joined by now husband John, who is also a Line Dance Teacher (although in the later years he has been busy with his day job) but always helping when he can. John has a background in Ballroom Dancing, (Old Time, New Vouge, Latin, etc) and has been dancing since he was very young.
Whist I was teaching Line Dancing, I was also attending classes in New Vouge , Jive and Samba.
We continued to teach together in NSW until John's work took us to different places to live.
I suffered a few broken bones (in falls, not on the dance floor), so we only did Social Dancing for a few years.
In our dancing together we have done many Demonstrations and Corporate Events as well as a Guest Teacher at Line Dance Socials and also the Brisbane Show.
On our move to QLD, I joined Justgymnfitness, where I later became their Line Dance Teacher with two classes each week. Also, I teach an Active Parks Line Dance Class for Ipswich City Council on Thursday nights.
John and I also attend other Line Dance lessons in between our own classes to learn new dances and also for some relaxation dancing.
I am deeply passionate about my Line Dance Teaching and I can assure you I always put 100% into every class.
Dancing is so good for exercise, mental wellbeing and it keeps your mind and body active which is a great positive for all and who doesn't like listening to music, whatever the genre.
My greatest pleasure comes from seeing any dancer achieve a dance correctly (even with a few variations, remember there are no mistakes in Line Dancing only variations), and having some fun while learning and enjoying the social atmosphere of the company of others. We love a noisy class as then we know that all are enjoying their dancing.
Come along and try a class. Check out the Class Times page for details.
